NSLC releases First Quarter financial performance
Halifax – August 22, 2023 – The NSLC released its first quarter financial results today (April 1, 2023 – July 2, 2023), reporting a 1.9% decrease in earnings to $70.7 million. Total sales for the quarter were down 0.1% to $219.1 million, with beverage alcohol sales of $190.0 million and cannabis sales of $29.1 million.
“We experienced a slight decline in beverage alcohol sales this quarter,” said Greg Hughes, President & CEO. “In spite of this decline, our sales performance overall is still ahead of pre-pandemic levels.”
Beverage alcohol sales decreased by 1.1% and cannabis sales increased by 6.7% when compared to the previous year. Despite an overall decrease, sales to bars, pubs and restaurants increased by 5.9% to $13.7 million, and sales to Agency stores increased by 1.1% to $17.2 million. Sales of local beverage alcohol and cannabis increased by 5.7% to $32.8 million led by Nova Scotia cannabis sales, which grew 22.2% to $9.5 million.
“This quarter the average price of cannabis per gram was further reduced 2.1% to $6.02, compared to last year, as we work to impact illicit sales in the province,” Hughes said. “Local cannabis products now account for 32.6% of all cannabis sales at the NSLC.”
Corporate social responsibility is at the heart of who we are. Our people are driven by the good we do and our commitment to having a positive impact on the communities we serve.
With the support of our supplier partners, generous customers and participating Agency stores, our team members raised $685,000 for the month-long IWK Campaign and $200,000 in support of the Red Cross Canada Wildfire Fund Appeal.
In April, with the support of our supplier partners, the NSLC’s For the Good of the Community Fund recipients were announced, which resulted in total funding of $140,000 to provide grants to 11 non-profit organizations across the province. This included supporting the Clean Foundation to restore an altered salt marsh at Sitmu’k in Pictou Landing First Nation, and Independent Living Nova Scotia who help provide cooking and connection workshops to gain cooking, meal planning, and budgeting skills to Nova Scotians with disabilities and their families.
In all, 80 NSLC employees volunteered more than 540 hours to give back to our communities throughout the quarter.
