Inclusion Diversity Equity and Accessibility

The NSLC works hard to create exceptional experiences for our team members and shoppers, and takes our role as the responsible retailer of beverage alcohol and cannabis in Nova Scotia seriously.

We believe that everyone should be valued and respected for their unique perspectives and experiences. At the NSLC, we are committed to creating an environment that is inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible for everyone.

Our Commitments

Our commitment to Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) is grounded in our shared responsibility to ensure we are all working toward fostering a culture of belonging, whether it is through the products we sell, how we recruit, select, and support our team members, or who we partner with in our communities.

Fostering a culture of belonging

We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels safe, welcome, and can thrive in their career at any level, that all shoppers feel welcome, and to make sure we continue to champion inclusion and diversity in our communities with our partners.

Providing inclusive customer service

We are committed to creating physically and psychologically safe and accessible places to both work and shop. This commitment is core to who we are as an organization and is reflected in our values and how we show up through our service standards for shoppers and team members.

Embedding IDEA into how we work

We are committed to applying an inclusive and accessible lens to everything we do to ensure that our strategies to achieve our goals and objectives are fulfilled. IDEA will be applied to all strategic planning at the NSLC, including our five-year strategic plan and annual business plans.

What We’re Doing

Celebration & Recognition

The NSLC works to recognize and celebrate the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and contributions of all individuals within our organization and our communities. Working with our IDEA Employee Resource Group, the NSLC continues to reflect on past events, seek feedback on what is most meaningful to our communities, and look to include new events moving forward.

Accessibility

In accordance with the Nova Scotia Accessibility Act and the efforts of the Province to be fully accessible, we are working toward our own goals to create inclusive and accessible environments across the organization. We also want to build awareness of these requirements for our employees and shoppers. Our Accessibility Plan provides greater details in how we are working toward these goals.

Environment, Social, & Governance

The NSLC is committed to delivering on our legislated mandate through responsible retailing and sustainable business practices together with our partners and shoppers. Part of this effort, both at the NSLC and in the communities we serve, is our commitment to fostering inclusive, equitable, and accessible spaces that are reflective and respectful of all Nova Scotians.

How We’re Doing It

Collecting Data

In our efforts to improve our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, the NSLC is committed to learning about our team members. Through our bi-annual corporate-wide survey, we ask team members to self-identify their gender, age, disability, ethnicity, place of birth and more so that we can better understand and identify current gaps and opportunities to improve workplace inclusion and promote an inclusive and equitable work culture.

First-Voice Consultation

The NSLC works with internal and external committees and resource groups focused on advancing our diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility commitments. One example is our IDEA Employee Resource Group that brings together team members with a shared interest in advancing a diversity topic, whether as a member of a diverse community or as an ally. The goal of the group is to provide a trusted network for support, knowledge sharing, the advancement of IDEA, planning initiatives, and resources that will lead to greater respect and inclusion for all NSLC team members.

Recruiting Diverse Talent

We know that diversity of thought, identity, culture, and background makes for an innovative and successful team, and we make this a priority when we look for individuals to join our team.

We also appreciate that not everyone has had the same access and opportunities. We encourage anyone who is interested in joining our team to apply and reach out to us if there is an accessibility concern so that we can work one-on-one. We want to continue improving, enhancing, and diversifying our team.

We also welcome the opportunity to work with supported employment programs and to learn more about inclusive hiring. If you are interested in having the NSLC attend a job fair, want to share candidate stories or talent, or are looking to explore partnerships and/or collaboration, please let us know at diversityandinclusion@mynslc.com.
