NSLC Top Nova Scotia IWK Fundraiser

Organizations Across NS Benefit from NSLC Community Fund

More than a dozen charities and non-profit organizations that support the wellbeing of Nova Scotians will receive financial support from the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation’s new Community Investment program.

The NSLC established the For the Good of Our Community Fund together with its supplier partners to provide financial support to organizations that improve the quality of life and wellbeing of people living in communities across the province.

“Our goal is to support organizations and initiatives that work to build healthy and sustainable communities, increasing everyone’s ability to find moments of positive connection and creating a stronger Nova Scotia,” said Marley MacDonald, Manager, Social Responsibility & Community Relations at the NSLC.

The annual community investment fund has three focus areas: community wellbeing, the environment and responsibility stewardship. Thirteen organizations have been named recipients of this year’s grant and will receive a total of up to $140,000.

They include organizations that help the homeless and those seeking safety by providing food, furniture, and support paying bills; are building affordable homes; helping to pay expenses related to receiving medical treatment; and developing accessible outdoor trails.

Recipients must be registered charities or non-profits working to support communities within Nova Scotia and address areas of critical community need.

QUOTES:

Freedom Kitchen - Caroline Gallop, Co-Coordinator
“We are thrilled to partner with the NSLC to expand our free meal program and work with our clients to
deliver budget-friendly, nutritional meals in a new manner. Working with client families and youth, we
look forward to sharing new recipes utilizing every day food staples to create multiple options for meal
planning. This education lessens the stress that comes with not knowing how to provide a nutritional
meal to your family, and also follows through to the next generation who learn by example.”

Breton Ability Centre – Harman Singh, CEO
“We are honoured to be a recipient of the NSLC’s For the Good of the Community Fund. At Breton
Ability Centre, we strive every day to improve the lives of individuals living with varying abilities. One of
the ways we achieve this is creating opportunities for community and social engagement, recreational

QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation – President and CEO Susan Mullin
The QEII Patient Essentials Fund is 100 per cent donor funded and QEII care providers are able to make
the decision on the spot regarding patients who may need some financial support — as soon as their
need for help arises. Our frontline healthcare workers are able to see what people need, and what will
make a difference. Our donors are already having an immediate and tangible impact on the lives of
patients and their families. This impact will continue to grow with ongoing support from our
community.”

Canadian Red Cross - Christina Baert-Wilson, Nova Scotia Provincial Director
“A key element of our community health service is the Health Equipment Loan Program or HELP, which
provides Nova Scotians with free short-term loans of wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility and safety
devices that are necessary while recovering from illness, surgery or injury. This generous donation helps
with the cost of maintaining or buying new equipment for the HELP program, so will benefit thousands
of Nova Scotians over many years.”
