The point of a quiet night in is to enjoy an evening that recharges rather than drains. It’s still about enjoying the company of friends, but in an atmosphere of lower expectations, lower energy and, frankly, less work. Here are four tips to create a warm and cozy atmosphere that says, "Tonight, we're just taking it easy.”
- Keep the numbers small
This is a more intimate affair. Don’t invite more people than can comfortably sit in your living room. Because this event is about sitting, not standing. Invite a few friends to create, and enjoy, the perfect amount of casual conversation.
- Set expectations up front
When you extend your invitation, make it clear what the evening will be: a low-key get-together. Tell your guests to dress comfortably and not to “dress up”. It’s all about a quiet night to catch up, enjoy a couple of drinks and maybe even watch a movie.
- Low lights, low music
Keep it feeling warm and cozy. Dim the lights, or even turn them off and use candles and a lamp or two to cast a warm glow. This also isn’t the time for your high-energy playlists. Slower tunes help keep a slower energy.
- A little controlled fire
If you have a fireplace, now’s the perfect time to fire it up. If you don’t have one, safely placed candles are a great way to create a warm atmosphere. Check out Nova Scotia’s very own Prana Rock “candles” for a way to make a warm statement that also supports local artisans. You can also get interesting ethanol burners that add a modern, fireplace-like glow.
